City of Sodom Discovered: Archeological find gives insight into story of destruction

Evidence of a city that was expanded and given defences of thick walls and ramparts, including a 5.2-metre thick mudbrick wall of 10 metres high

It seems that Sodom and Gomorrah were not as “destroyed” as previously thought.

The ruins of the biblical city of Sodom reportedly have been discovered by U.S. archeologists in southern Jordan.

God punished the wickedness of the citizens by destroying the city with brimstone and fire, the biblical story explains. Only the righteous inhabitants were allowed to escape the destruction and were spared by God.

The archeological team, directed by Steve Collins of New Mexico’s Trinity Southwest University, has been working for 10 years in the Jordan Valley. It now believes it has uncovered this magnificent historical site.

If confirmed, the discovery could give the archeological community an invaluable understanding of how people lived during between 3500 BC and 1540 BC.

And perhaps most interestingly, the excavations are revealing that life in the city came to an abrupt end during the Middle Bronze Age (2000-1540 BC), seemingly consistent with the biblical story. Preliminary tests reveal there was a stark end of life that lasted for about 700 years.

Collins addressed the significance of this discovery: ”The archaeological team unearthed a gold mine of ancient monumental structures and artifacts that are revealing a massive Bronze Age city-state that dominated the region of Jordan’s southern Jordan Valley, even during a time when many other great cities of the ‘Holy Land’ region were either abandoned or in serious decline,” he told Popular Archeology, which first reported the findings.

“Very, very little was known about the Bronze Age in the Middle Ghor (southern Jordan Valley) before we began our excavations in 2005,” he added. “Even most of the archaeological maps of the area were blank, or mostly so. What we’ve got on our hands is a major city-state that was, for all practical purposes, unknown to scholars before we started our project.”

Because Collins is so familiar with the excavated area and surrounding historical sites, he is fairly sure this is Sodom, he said.

He also has studied the descriptions of Sodom extensively. “Tall el-Hammam seemed to match every Sodom criterion demanded by the text,” he said.

The uncovered site contains both a lower and upper city, complete with a high city wall surrounding it, gates, and a town plaza. The city wall was constructed with mud bricks. The upper city was built to replace the lower city during the Middle Bronze Age.

Collins speculated that the upper part of the city was built for elites to escape threats from invaders. He also said the fortifications are much more extensive than previously imagined for communities during this age.

Nelson Bunker Hunt dead: Former world’s richest man dies in 'modest circumstances' in US after losing his fortune

The Texan oilman and real-life JR Ewing was a Bible-bashing racehorse owner whose ambitions matched his size

Nelson Bunker Hunt might have been born in El Dorado, Arkansas – which, come to think of it, was a pretty suitable place of origin for someone raised with money to burn – but spiritually, he was a Texan through and through, an oilman who was briefly a candidate for the title of the world’s richest man.

Nelson Bunker Hunt, who has died aged 88, was a multi-billionaire Texan oilman who, with his brother Herbert, attempted to corner the world silver market. They went spectacularly bankrupt, threatening to bring down the American financial system in the process, and were forced into a humiliating “fire sale” of their prized collections of coins, art and racehorses.

The Hunts’ fortune had been built up by their father, Haroldson Lafayette Hunt, a farmer’s son from Illinois who became a professional poker player known as Arkansas Slim. Famous for his claim that “Money doesn’t mean anything to me. It’s only the way you keep the score”, HL Hunt went on to become a “wildcat” oilman (independent producer), forming a partnership with a man called “Dad” Joiner, who had discovered a massive oil field in east Texas (and later insisted that Hunt had cheated him). He built his company, Hunt Oil, into the largest independent producer of oil and natural gas in America and, by the time of his death in 1974, was one of America’s three richest men, alongside Howard Hughes and Paul Getty.

The empire Hunt had created was spread among the 12 living children he had fathered by three different wives, who had lived, dotted about the country, in blissful ignorance of one another’s existence. But the bulk of the family businesses were run by Bunker, Herbert and Lamar, sons of his first marriage to Lyda Bunker.

It was the rotund 21-stone “Bunker”, more than any of his siblings, who seemed to have inherited his father’s laconic way with words (his observation that “people who know how much they are worth generally aren’t worth much” became a favourite of the world’s super-rich) as well as his taste for gambling.

He built up stables of some 1,000 racehorses, including the thoroughbred mare Dahlia, who earned $1.5 million and won 10 group races during her racing career in Europe and the United States, and Exceller, a colt he bought for $25,000 who achieved career earnings of more than $1.6 million. In the 1970s he was reckoned to be worth up to $16 billion.

In 1973, however, Bunker and his brother Herbert embarked on an audacious attempt to corner the world’s silver market as a hedge against inflation and to diversify the family’s interests away from oil. Together with two Saudi princes, they set up a trading vehicle, and by 1979 had amassed about half the world’s deliverable supply. At one stage the brothers held shooting competitions among cowboys on their Dallas ranch, with winners awarded the opportunity to ride shotgun on aeroplanes delivering bullion to a high-security vault in Switzerland. “I wanted to invest in something I could get my hands on,” Bunker explained later.

The results were dramatic — and sudden. In 1979 the price for silver jumped from $6 per ounce to a record high of $48.70 per ounce – an increase of 712 per cent. But the hugely inflated price caused dealers to release a flood of silver on to the market. On March 27 1980, later known as Silver Thursday, the price collapsed to $10.80 per ounce and the conspirators found themselves saddled with commitments to buy more silver than they could afford, and with stocks paid for at inflated prices with money borrowed from brokers and banks. “A billion dollars ain’t what it used to be,” Bunker observed ruefully.

The Hunts’ inability to meet their obligations caused panic in the markets. Government officials feared that some large Wall Street brokerage firms and banks might collapse. The threat was so grave that Paul Volcker, chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, reluctantly allowed the Hunts a billion-dollar credit line.

When oil prices followed silver on a downward slide, the Hunts filed for bankruptcy in an attempt to protect their assets. By early 1988, following years of lawsuits, civil charges, fines and damages claims, their fortune had reportedly dwindled to a mere $1 billion. In August that year a federal jury concluded that the brothers had conspired to manipulate the silver price.

Forced into personal bankruptcy that required them to liquidate assets, the brothers auctioned off immense collections of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic coins, raising more than $30 million. Sotheby’s in New York sold their art collections, and they were even forced to offload household items, including an enamel teapot which went for $20. Most painful of all for Bunker, however, was the sale of 580 of his prize racehorses, including Dahlia, for $47 million.

As Bunker Hunt told Senate investigators when trying to explain his role in the debacle: “A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you are talking about real money.”

One of seven children, Nelson Bunker Hunt was born in El Dorado, Arkansas, on February 22 1926. A sister died in infancy while a brother would be incapacitated following a prefrontal lobotomy.

When Bunker was 12, his family moved to Dallas, where they lived in a replica of George Washington’s home, Mount Vernon, bordering an artificial lake. Despite their wealth, the Hunts were raised modestly, and Bunker was always conservative about how he spent money on himself. He did not smoke or drink, flew economy class, drove a battered Cadillac and always turned off the lights when leaving a room.

After dropping out of college, Bunker worked with his father and brothers in the oil business, but failed to impress in his early years, embarking on an ambitious international exploration programme which produced nothing but dry holes. He finally hit the big time in the early 1960s with the discovery of the Sarir oil field in Libya, with reserves estimated at 11 to 13 billion barrels. All of a sudden he found himself quoted, at least on paper, as the world’s wealthiest private individual.

He went on to build up his collection of racehorses and, as well as eight million acres of oil fields in Libya and offshore wells in the Philippines and Mexico, he owned skyscrapers, cattle ranches and mines around the world.

His fortunes received something of a setback, however, when Colonel Gaddafi nationalised his Libyan operations in 1973 – a shock that persuaded him of the need to invest in something “safe”. His solution was silver.

The first generation of Texas oil billionaires had nurtured the growth of America’s radical Right. Bunker followed in this tradition. A casual anti-Semite and evangelical Christian, he was close to the Reverend Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson and supported such causes as the virulently anti-communist John Birch Society. Biographers claimed that Hunt’s silver dealings were fuelled by the fear of an imminent economic apocalypse caused by the machinations of communists and the American liberal establishment.

After bankruptcy proceedings Hunt was reported to have been left with nothing but his home, two ageing cars and personal belongings. In fact, though, he still had millions of dollars in trusts set up by his father.

In 1951 Nelson Bunker Hunt married Caroline Lewis, who survives him with their son and three daughters.

Blessing of the Holy Muron Held at Genocide Memorial in Bikfaya

Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia His Holiness Aram I blessed the Holy Muron in a ceremony held at the Armenian Genocide Memorial at the St. Mary’s Monastery in Bikfaya, Lebanon and attended by clergymen, ecumenical guests, diplomats, official representatives, pilgrims from different dioceses in North and South America, Europe, and the Middle East.

In the Armenian Church the Holy Muron is prepared and blessed every seven years. This year’s ceremony was dedicated to the memory of the 1.5 million martyrs of the Armenian Genocide and the Armenian people’s commitment to the pursuit of justice.

The ceremony began with a procession towards the Armenian Genocide Martyrs Memorial where the ritual was held. Aram I walked towards the monument under a canopy held by four laymen representing the Diaspora. They walked behind two bishops carrying the case containing the relic of the right hand of St. Gregory the Illuminator. Four bishops carried containers of the Muron that had been brought from Holy Etchmiadzin, the old Muron from the Catholicosate of Cilicia, and rose and balsam oil. Twelve other bishops led the way.

During the blessing of the oil, Catholicos Aram I was assisted by Prelates of the Dioceses of the Catholicosate of Cilicia, two representatives of the Catholicosate of Holy Etchmidadzin: Primate of the Armenian Church in Georgia Bishop Vazken Mirzakhanian, and Prelate of Georgia Bishop Vartan Navasartian; as well as two representatives from the Patriarchate of Constantinople: Archbishop Aram Ateshian, the Locum Tenens of the Patriarchate, and Bishop Sahak Mashalian.

The ceremony began with readings from the Bible and special prayers recited by His Holiness and the bishops. To the original mixture of oil, spices, herbs, and essence of different plants, prepared 40 days ago, His Holiness added the essence of rose and the Holy Muron from Etchmiadzin, symbolising the unity of the Armenian Church. He then added the old Muron, which is the remnant of the healing oil St. Thaddeus brought to Armenia and the Holy Muron which was blessed by St. Gregory the Illuminator. His Holiness then mixed it all in the special cauldron with the relic of the right hand of St. Gregory the Illuminator.

When the Holy Muron was blessed, His Holiness Karekin II’s message was read by the representative of Holy Etchmiadzin. “I greet His Holiness Aram I with brotherly love. On the occasion of the blessing of the Holy Muron, we join you with our prayers and intercede with our recently sanctified martyrs and all our saints and ask God to grant us His peace, protect us and lead us to Him. The blessing of the Holy Muron is an invitation to us to renew our faith in Him, recommit ourselves to safeguarding our spiritual heritage and national identity. It is also an invitation to serve together for the glory of our Church and for the prosperity and strengthening of our homeland and the diaspora,” read a part of the message.

In his sermon, Aram I explained the special place of the Holy Muron in the Armenian Church used in children’s baptism and the ordination of priests. “Historically, the faith, love and hope of the Holy Muron have always empowered Armenians to endure the dark days of their history, safeguard their identity and rebuild their lives. Within the Armenian Church the Holy Muron has been the bond between the two Holy Sees,” said His Holiness.

The Catholicos concluded his message by highlighting the significance of the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide.  “The blessing of the Holy Muron today, on the 100th Anniversary commemorations of the genocide, is an invitation to our people to deepen their Christian faith, arm themselves with love and the power of hope in God, and continue demanding justice.”

കാഞ്ഞിരപ്പള്ളിയില്‍ നടന്ന പാസ്റ്ററല്‍ കൗണ്‍സില്‍ യോഗത്തിലാണ് മിശ്രവിവാഹത്തിനെതിരെ ബിഷപ്പ് വിവദപരാമര്‍ശം നടത്തിയത്. മറ്റ് മതസ്ഥരായ യുവാക്കള്‍ പ്രണയം നടിക്കുകയും ക്രിസ്തീയ പെണ്‍കുട്ടികള്‍ വീട്ടില്‍നിന്ന് ഇറങ്ങിപ്പോകുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നത് കൂടുകയാണ്. പടിഞ്ഞാറന്‍ കാറ്റ് ആഞ്ഞുവീശുകയാണ്. ദേവാലയങ്ങളില്‍ നടക്കുന്ന 100 വിവാഹങ്ങളില്‍ ആറെണ്ണം മിശ്രവിവാഹമാണ്. വിശ്വാസികളെന്ന നിലയില്‍ ഇത് തടയേണ്ടതാണ്. സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും വിശ്വാസികള്‍ എന്ന നിലയില്‍ മിശ്രവിവാഹത്തെ എതിര്‍ക്കേണ്ടതാണ് - അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു.

Joint Statement on the Second Anniversary of the Kidnapping of Archbishops Paul and John

A Joint Statement Issued by the two Patriarchates of Antioch and of All the East:

 

The Greek (Roum) Orthodox Church and the Syriac Orthodox Church

On the occasion of the second anniversary of kidnapping the two Metropolitans of Aleppo: His Eminence Paul (Yazigi) and His Eminence John (Abraham) on April 22, 2013

Damascus April 22, 2015

“It is for our hope in the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial.” (Acts 23:6)

Paul and John are on trial; the Christian persecution for Evangelization of the first century has now returned to this land. Such persecution is not common in the East or in modern times. The consequences of this trial are not only earthly but heavenly. In this struggle, the Great Judge will prevail, for His judgement is both the case of True Man and True God.

Maybe this trial is unfair, most probably because the kidnapped are not able to plead their case. But their testimony resounds ceaselessly by their spirit and life, and echoes in the wilderness of this world.

O brethren of the Word, you are our children in Aleppo; in you and among you we planted the seeds of the true word, the word of witnessing and of ministry. Behold, the plant is growing! We see this growth in you and we are proud of its fruit. We are astounded by your perseverance, which strengthens our perseverance. We exalt your steadfastness which sustains us. We esteem your patience, which recompenses our patience. How not? You are the crown of our glory and pride (1 Thess 2.19,20) in this trial against evangelization.

O brethren of Faith, we are on trial because of what we believed in and evangelized and we served by the hand, heart and conscience. We live today on earth so that we can live thenceforth in Heaven. Man has the right to believe in the True God, and to faithfully minister with this faith his neighbor as himself. Our belief in the True Man, leads us to serve Him anywhere we are, but we will continue to be citizens where we are today. We will not deviate one iota from this determination. It deserves every sacrifice in defense of human dignity. Man is oppressed and dehumanized by the contemporary human market which offers people as a commodity in a wicked commerce. The sting of dehumanization shall be broken in thistrial against dignity.

O brethren of hope, be not oblivious to the fact that we are on trial “ for our hope in the resurrection of the dead”. (Acts 23:6) St. Paul attested once, and we declare it out loud: they want to eradicate the future at the expense of the present! However, they do not know that the Lord of heaven and earth, Who created them both, also provided that we may traverse the distance separating the two in spirit through Faith, and may attain the future with God-given hope toward achieving His promise to us. The present life is transient, but the future one is permanent.

We all look forward in great expectation, remaining steadfast with this hope in the face of death, crouching close to destroy your bodies and souls. However, our hope in the resurrection of Christ has broken the sting of death in this trial against endurance.

O brethren of love, it is undeniable that when facing such a trial one must confront it with his true identity and faith. If we betray the love of Christ towards us, our hearts and consciences grow dim. When we see you strong and consistent, brethren, our hearts rejoice with the sight of your love among the wreckage of fallen humanity, whose self-centeredness has truly reached the gates of Hades. By your love we conquer everything, and by it you overcome all forms of death, so that you may enter into the Kingdom of the God of Love. Amongst devastation, death and foul play, the evidence of your love will be built as a final judgment in the trial against conscience.

O brethren of blood, you have been judged, or you will be judged. Some of you have received the favorable judgment of God to be martyrs and confessors, and some of you live the testimony of unsurpassed hope, in silence or under threat, in weakness or in agony. However, by your perseverance you muzzled those who lay a wager for your betrayal, apostasy, and feebleness in the face of weakness, enticement, or threat. Your blood, whether still pulsating or shed, is a balm to your families and to your brethren, and a seal of victory in the trial against immortality.

O brethren of truth, be assured that anyone who has declared victory over truth and hidden falsehood is silenced. We see them through the eyes of the heart, and fathom what is noticeable in them, in their words (media) and actions, as well as in their secret intentions, and consciences. No truth will supersede the truth of God and man, regardless of their sins. This is the cry of John in all of us: “He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer.” (1 Jn 3:14 to 15). We will not compromise when it comes to human beings, and we will not yield to anything except to the truth. We proclaim it with you, at the heart of your suffering, struggle, steadfastness, and courage. By this, you have disclosed their evident error in the trial against truth.

O brethren and compatriots, your wounds are our wounds, and your pain is our pain, your suffering is our suffering, and your tears are our tears, and your life is our life. Our hands are extended to you, and our hearts have room for all of you. Let us shake hands, talk to each other, have peace, reconciliation, mutual understanding, cooperation, and integration. A solution is not achieved by violence, but by multiple forms of dialogue. Let’s act now. Fear comes when human civilization perishes and disappears, and when this trial is prolonged. With you we raise the flag of thepartnership in the trial against unity.

O brethren of fate, our East; we are the sand of its deserts, dirt of its fields, rocks of its mountains, water of its rivers, roots of its trees. If they vanish, life will no longer exist or it will have no meaning. Our East has become an open arena for all evils. The bargain of this trial is to demolish life in its cradle, shatter civilizations, remove the rudiments of its landmarks, conceal its characteristics, displace man, destroy history, and disfigure the identity of God. Our victory of truth on earth is derived from heaven, but not by calling upon God to be exploited, as impulses of passions, of which heaven is completely acquitted! We are devoted to stay in the East, to which we belong, of which we are, in which we bear witness to our faith, from which our witness starts out, and on which we build our humanity. The one God was not for us a subject of dispute, and reason for fighting, or cause of division. We learned to address Him as “Our Father” (Matthew 6.9), so we are all, “Brethren.” We can speak to everyone in truth and love, and “to lay down our lives for them” (1 Jn 3:16); and so we are able to confess that we share a common destiny. Either we all hold tight together, or we all lose! No believer or nonbeliever, whether from the East or outside it, can bear a false witness, blinded to what is going on here. With you we raise the banner of brotherhood, confounding the false witnesses the trial against human and religious.

O brethren in humanity, our cause is beyond one group or nation, and wider than one region. Our ordeal is a test for all humanity in the contemporary world, which is distorted by its enslavement and various distractions. We are thankful for all those who are aware of these perils, and for those who are striving to contain them, treat them, and prevent them. We will not become a cause to be resolved and decrypted. We are not like this, for you are our cause! We are vigilant, from our dwelling place, over the consciences of those who willingly continue to eradicate our cause: the cause of the true human and the true God. Is it not unreasonable for roles to be exchanged, so that the sentenced might become a judge, even if he was in a cell, and the judge might become sentenced, even though he is sitting on the judgment seat?

O brother in completeness, He Who was incarnate for us, carried our nature, endured unjust sentence, ascended on the Cross, went to Hades and then rose to heaven, has taught us that we are your “brethren”, unworthy though we be, and that “your Father is our Father and your God is our God” (Jn 20:17). Our peace and joy in you have reached to a level whose height and depth is unattainable in our spiritual life, and whose length and width is immeasurable in our material life! It is a joy, and peace, according to the measure of the giver: “My Peace I leave with you, My joy I give unto you… no man taketh from you.” (Jn 14:27; 16:22). You have determined to give us your joy and your peace! How great is our victory, and how benevolent is God’s judgment!

These are the ten categories of the brethren, and the “book” of our complete defense, which we “took out of the right hand of Him that sat upon the throne.” (Rev 5:7). This is our good news to you; “Listen to them” (Acts 2:14), so great is our consolation in you. We are all aware that the trial is not over yet, as we have yet many rounds, according to the will of the Holy One. “What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid… What if God, willing to show His wrath, and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: and that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had afore prepared unto glory… “(Romans 9:14; 22-23).

This is a victory of the right hand of the Most High, accomplished through you and through us! As our unceasing encounter is sustained in prayer for all, we lift it up to Thee, O Lord, for unto Thee belongs, glory, power, worship, and dominion forever! Amen.

കോൺഫറൻസിനോടനുബന്ധിച്ച് പൗരോഹിത്യ ശുശ്രൂഷയുടെ രജത ജൂബിലി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന മാർ നിക്കോളോവോസിന് ആയുരാരോഗ്യങ്ങളും മംഗളങ്ങളും നേർന്ന് സംഘടിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ട ചടങ്ങിൽ മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്ത കേക്ക് മുറിച്ചു. സെന്റ് ജോർജ് ഇടവകാംഗം അലക്സാണ്ടർ വർഗീസ് തിരുമേനിക്കുവേണ്ടി തയാറാക്കിയതായിരുന്നു കേക്ക്.
